What material should I use in order to make a chess set?

I’m a design student and as a first task I have to design a chess set. I’d like to know what materials are available to use (I can’t use wood, stone, plastic or other materials which need mechanical finishes)

Playdough? Maybe soap? You could make plushie chess pieces and make the bottom like a blanket if you can sew. Well those are just things that came to mind. Good luck.

I also think pottery clay would be a good idea. After it’s fired, you could glaze the pieces black and white if you wanted.

First you *could* make a chess set from virtually *any* materials or objects at all, if you want to be creative about it.

Second, I don’t know what you mean about materials such as stone or plastic needing a "mechanical finish." In general, those things wouldn’t need finishes or sealers at all.

Anyway, if you want to check out some chess sets made from polymer clay –and there are also links to some made from film cannisters and other things I think too– look on this page at my website:
    http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/kids_beginners.htm
(…about 2/3 of the way down the list at the top of that page, you’ll see the category for Games, and for CHESS, CHECKERS, BOARDS –click on that)
Or, maybe things there would give you some ideas no matter which material(s) you ended up using.

Wait a minute – the rules say you can’t use something which requires a second step for finishing after cutting or punching out ? You might need to state those rules before receiving useable help here.

Anyway, you can make a chess set out of ANYTHING, from pictures on round flat caps to 3D types. My wife sells sets made out of safety pins, beads, and buss wire – all YOU have to do is figure out to to put them together into something that looks like the actual pieces. My wife figured it out enough to sell them. :)

Other methods include gluing objects together into the required shapes. you could make molds and glue sand together ( colored sand? ) into the required shapes, easy enough. Glue, sand, and mold. Or cut them into shape.

Balsa wood would work, it’s easy to work with a knife, and the shapes could be cut out easily.

If you have access to a soldering iron, you could solder pieces of paperclips bent into the required shapes to flat washers as bases.

Those are just a few of what I can think of. There’s thousands more methods and materials to use. Good luck!
