Initial Chess Set Up

Before we can begin to play our first chess game there is the initial Chess Set Up of the chess board that we need to understand. This Chess Set Up is good for every chess game we ever play so keep it in mind for the next time.

As you can see in the Chess Set Up graphic bellow the chess board consists of 64 squares divided into 8 rows and 8 columns. Each square has a unique coordinates of the crossing letter and number on the board. Before placing each of the chess pieces in its proper placement on the chess board we need to make sure that the board is positioned in a way that each player has a white square on his extreme lower right side.

When beginning the Chess Set Up scheme we will first place the kings of both armies. The black King will stand on a white square while the white King stands on a black square and are placed opposite of each other. We also notice that when the chess Set Up is completed the two armies are a mirrored image of each other in addition each of the pawns in the front line is supported by another more powerful chess piece behind.

After the Chess Set Up is completed it is time to determine which player gets the white army and which player gets the black one. The white army always begins the match. Normally one player takes a white pawn and a black pawn in his fists and the other players selects one hand to determine which of the army he gets.

In other words, what does a chess set consist of in your mind?

A chess set includes pieces and the board. Wikipedia defines it as including set and boards and contains this quote from Grandmaster Larry Evans in his 1974 book "Evans on Chess" indicating that Evans agrees.

"Make sure the one you buy is easy on the eye, felt-based, and heavy (weighted). The men should be constructed so they don’t come apart. … The regulation board used by the U. S. Chess Federation is green and buff — never red and black. However there are several good inlaid [wood] boards on the market. … Avoid cheap equipment. Chess offers a lifetime of enjoyment for just a few dollars well spent at the outset."

The Free Dictionary also defines chess set as including pieces and a board.

Does anyone know where to get a Code Geass chess set?

I’m looking for a chess set like they use in the anime (NOT one that is based off of their characters). A friend of mine is completely addicted to Code Geass and I think they would really enjoy that set. So, if anyone knows where one is, that’d be so cool.

You cannot get an official replica of the chess set featured in the Code Geass anime, because it has not been made or released yet. The only piece that currently has an official replica is the Black King chess piece (see photo of mine in my source), which was sold together with a Lelouch figurine in January 2007. The figurine + Black King piece set has long been sold out now and the only way to get it is through secondhand or online auction sites, most of which are selling it for double the original retail price of 1,800 yen (~19 USD).

I’m a design student and as a first task I have to design a chess set. I’d like to know what materials are available to use (I can’t use wood, stone, plastic or other materials which need mechanical finishes)

Playdough? Maybe soap? You could make plushie chess pieces and make the bottom like a blanket if you can sew. Well those are just things that came to mind. Good luck.

I want me and my 8 year old son to learn how to play chess together, so was wondering where to get a beginners chess set?

just buy a normal chess set – it will come with all the rules (well it should do)

I lost one black pawn from this set a long time ago, and I’d like to find a replacement and a few extras. Tried most of the online chess stores, but none of them sell spare single pieces.

Ebay, or buy another set. :)

We have chess night every Thursday night at the public library. Almost everyone brings their little unweighted Stanton 3" discount store plastic sets. Some bring their Onyx mexican sets, the rare Franklin mint civil war set and an occasional traditional ceramic 5".

I want to scare and overwhelm my opponent with a huge set. I haven’t seen them in years. Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have the perfect place its www.Ebay.com there you type wooden chess set… and you’ll find a bunch of auctions for them.. You might also want to try Amazon.com there are usually good chess sets there but usually they are a little more expensive… Good luck at scaring those chess players..
